How To Obtain A Liquor License In Virginia

Posted on

Whether you own a bar or restaurant or you're hosting an event and plan to serve alcohol, you must get a liquor license in the state of Virginia before you can serve or sell any alcohol. While the rules may vary slightly between an individual and a business, the process is very similar because everything falls under the laws of the ABC, or Alcoholic Beverage Control office. Before you apply for a liquor license in Virginia, here is what you need to know.

Attend Class

Before you can apply for a liquor  license in Virginia, you must attend a class hosted by the Virginia ABC. There are plenty of locations throughout the commonwealth and they can be found by going to the Virginia ABC website or by giving them a call. Once you've found a close by location, you will need to attend a class. This class will cover topics like how to spot a fake ID, how to handle incidents that involve alcohol, and how to identify underage drinkers. You should register for this class as soon as possible to allow time for you to receive your score and get the liquor license within the time you need it.

Apply For The Right License

There are several different types of liquor licenses that can be issued in the state of Virginia. Before you apply, it's important that you know which kind you need. For example, if you are a business that plans to sell alcohol to customers, you will need a retail liquor license. If you are delivering liquor, you will need a special in state delivery permit. And, if you are just serving alcohol for a private event like a wedding or work function, you will need a banquet liquor license.

Submitting Paperwork

Once you've completed the test administered by the ABC, you should receive a certificate of completion within a couple of weeks that shows you have taken and passed the test. Bring this certificate with you and go to your local Virginia ABC office. Give them your certificate and complete the liquor license application, indicating the type of license you are applying for as well as the address where the alcohol will be served. Make sure you include up to date contact information so the ABC can contact you when the license is ready. The time it takes to process your license can vary depending on volume, so make sure you submit everything within a reasonable time frame so you can get it in place on time for your business grand opening or your big event.
