Do's And Don'Ts For Car Accident Related Injuries

Posted on

If you were involved in a car accident that resulted in an injury, it is very easy to make some mistakes with how you handle everything after the accident. Here are some things you should and should not do after the injury occurs.

Do: Get Medical Attention Immediately

Many people make the mistake of thinking that their injury is not serious and not receiving immediate medical attention. This can be for a variety of reasons, which usually involves worrying about the cost of medical treatment. If you were injured by another person that can be held liable for their actions, know that your medical bills will eventually be taken care of. If your injuries are not serious or the person is not found to be liable, all you may be out is your co-pay to visit the doctor

Getting immediate medical attention also shows that you are taking your injuries seriously. If you delay treatment for days or weeks, it is possible that you will be viewed as having injuries that are not serious. You may even be accused of passing off another injury as being related to the car accident. Get checked out by a doctor immediately to prevent this from happening.

Don't: Forget To Talk To Witnesses

Was there anyone around that saw the accident happen? If so, these witnesses may be the key to winning a personal injury case against the responsible person. Car accidents can sometimes be one person's word against the others, and a witness can help prove who is lying. Get contact information from witnesses so that you can get a recorded statement from them if necessary.

Do: Take Photographs

You'll want to take photographs of everything after the accident. The damage to your vehicle, the state of your injuries if they are visible, and anything that can help shed light on what happened. Take more photos than you think are necessary just to be safe.

Don't: Neglect Injury Documentation

It can be months before you have a hearing about your injury in either mediation or court, and it can be difficult to remember the state of your injuries and how recovery went. You'll want to document the recovery process by keeping a journal, which will keep track of things like range of motion, pain, mental state, and anything else that will play into your injury settlement.

Work with an injury attorney to make sure you are doing everything correctly after your car accident.
